This old stone stairway spirals into the sky as it transmutates from stone to clouds.
My favorite movie as a child was "Mary Poppins", and my favorite part was their adventure on the rooftops of London. At one point Mary, Bert and the children climbed into the sky on a stairway of chimney smoke. Perhaps this stairway can lead to similar adventures.

At one time this photograph was titled "Excelsior", the Latin word for "ever upward" or "ever onward". Soon after I sold the first print as "Excelsior" I thought of the alternate title "The Upward Spiral", which I've come to prefer. I've decided to change the title for the second half of the edition. Please note that this is still the same photograph and the same edition. Prints 1 through 50 are titled "Excelsior", and prints 51 - 100 are titled "The Upward Spiral". (Prints 1 - 50 have already been sold.)
