"Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?" - Poe

While on a stroll through the forest, the young lady stops for a moment of respite by this ancient tree.  Respite turns to sleep.  Sleep turns into dreaming.  She awakens to find that the vision in her dream is real.  Or is she still dreaming?  Perhaps a dream within a dream.

I took this photograph of Amanda sitting on the roots of this wonderful old tree at Hayes Arboretum.  I noticed this tree during previous hikes, and each time I made a mental note to come back someday and photograph it.  I finally did for this photograph.  I returned later hoping to photograph it again only to find that the old tree had fallen since my last visit.  An arboretum employee estimated it to be around 500 years old.  I feel fortunate to have captured it on film during it's last year standing.

A Dream Within A Dream
Edgar Allan Poe

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow--
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand--
How few! yet how they creep
While I weep--while I weep!
O God!  can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God!  can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
